Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 160

Me and My House

Firm Foundations

Choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
JOSHUA 24:15 · ESV

Joshua doesn't pretend the decision is neutral. He lines up the options plainly — serve whatever gods your ancestors served, or pick something else, but stop pretending there's a version of life where you serve nothing at all. Everybody's serving something. The only real question is what.

What lands hardest is the personal turn at the end: whatever everyone else decides, here's what I'm doing. That's not peer pressure, and it's not really an argument either. It's just one person stating clearly where they've landed, without waiting for consensus first.

You don't have to have this fully sorted to notice the honesty in it. Everyone is serving something — money, approval, comfort, control, something. The question this verse leaves you with isn't whether you're serving something, but whether you've ever actually chosen it on purpose.

If you've never actually chosen on purpose what you're serving, that's a question worth answering honestly, whatever the answer turns out to be.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
