DAILY VERSE · Day 161

God Sees the Heart

Firm Foundations

The LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.
1 SAMUEL 16:7 · ESV

This verse comes from a strange moment — Samuel is about to anoint a king and keeps guessing wrong, drawn to the tall, impressive-looking brothers first. God keeps saying no. The one who actually gets chosen is the kid nobody thought to call in from the field.

What's worth noticing is the specific contrast drawn here: humans default to outward appearance because it's the only thing we can actually see. It's not really a flaw, it's just a limit. But the verse names something that isn't limited that way — an attention that goes past the resume, the outfit, the highlight reel, straight to whatever's actually going on inside you.

Most of us spend a lot of energy managing how we look from the outside. It's worth pausing on the idea that there might be a kind of seeing that doesn't require any of that performance at all.

If you're tired of being seen only for how you look from the outside, it might be worth finding out what it means to be known all the way through.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
