Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 146

Audience of One

Courage to Obey

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
GALATIANS 1:10 · ESV

Most of us are performing for somebody, even when we don't notice it — a boss, a parent, a crowd of people we'll never actually meet but still picture judging us. Paul asks a blunt question here: whose approval am I actually chasing?

It's not a comfortable question because most people-pleasing runs on autopilot. You don't decide to care what everyone thinks; you just do, and it shapes what you say, what you post, who you avoid disappointing. The verse doesn't shame that instinct — it just points out that it has a cost. You can't fully belong to something bigger while you're still auditioning for smaller audiences.

You don't need to have this figured out to feel the tug of it. Just notice, today, whose applause you're actually working for — and whether that's who you want running your life.

If you're tired of performing for an audience that never seems satisfied, it might be worth asking what it looks like to live for One who already is.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
