Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 8

Ask, Seek, Knock

Learning to Pray

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
MATTHEW 7:7 · ESV

Three verbs, each one more active than the last: ask, seek, knock. Jesus isn't describing a one-time request whispered into the dark and forgotten. He's describing something closer to showing up at someone's door and actually staying there.

That might sound uncomfortable if prayer has always seemed like a private ritual for people who already know what they're doing. But this verse doesn't say "ask correctly" or "seek if you're qualified." It just says ask, seek, knock — as if the only real requirement is honesty about wanting something and the willingness to say so out loud.

Maybe you've never prayed a real prayer in your life. This verse suggests that the door isn't locked to people who are new at this. It's opened to people who actually knock.

If you've never actually tried praying and wondered what would happen, that curiosity might be worth following further.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
