My Portion Is He

New Year in Christ

"The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."
LAMENTATIONS 3:24 · ESV

A new year usually comes with a list — what to fix, what to finally get right, what version of yourself you're supposed to become by next December. This verse offers something different to carry into it: not a resolution, but a portion. Something already given, not something you still have to earn or build.

That's worth noticing right before the calendar turns. Most New Year thinking is about what you're going to do differently. This verse is about what's already true regardless of what you do — that there's something steady enough to hope in before a single resolution gets kept or broken.

You don't need to know yet what this next year holds to say this much: whatever it holds, it isn't the only thing you have to hold onto. There's a portion underneath the plans, one that doesn't depend on how well you keep them.

Before you make any resolutions this year, it might be worth asking what you'd be hoping in if none of them worked out.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
