Discovering Jesus Together

Light of Life

Eternal Light

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
JOHN 8:12 · ESV

"I am the light of the world" is a claim, not a comforting metaphor — someone standing in front of a crowd and saying, essentially, I am the thing the old prophecies were pointing at. That's either an enormous overstatement or it's true. Jesus never really left much room in between.

What follows is specific: whoever follows me will not walk in darkness. Not whoever admires me from a distance, not whoever agrees with the moral teaching — whoever follows. It's an invitation to actually go somewhere with him, not just to feel better about a saying.

You don't have to resolve whether you believe the claim before you're allowed to sit with it. But it's worth noticing this isn't vague spirituality. It's one specific person, making one specific claim about himself, and inviting a specific response.

If you've never actually looked at who Jesus claimed to be, rather than the version secondhand opinions gave you, that's worth doing directly.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
