The Great Light

Light of the World

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
ISAIAH 9:2 · ESV

Light that's only ever been seen, never reflected, isn't doing everything it could. This verse describes people seeing a great light — but the natural next question is what happens after you've seen something like that. Does it just illuminate you, or does it change what you give off to the people around you?

You don't have to answer that question today, or even believe the premise yet. But it's worth noticing that this isn't a private, one-person kind of light. It shone on a whole people, standing together in the same darkness. Whatever this light is, it wasn't designed to end with the person who first noticed it.

If you're still deciding what you think about any of this, that's fine — this is a place to look honestly, not to perform belief you don't have. But it's worth asking what it would mean if the darkness you've been standing in turned out to have a light already shining into it.

If you're still deciding what you think, it might help to ask what this light would mean for the people around you, not just for you.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
