A Great Light

Heaven's Light

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
ISAIAH 9:2 · ESV

Deep darkness is a strange phrase to translate — some versions call it the shadow of death. Not just night, not just a dim room, but the specific darkness that comes from being near loss, near endings, near the things people don't like to say out loud.

That's a bigger claim than "things will get better." It's naming the darkest version of dark and saying light reaches even there. Not a softer darkness somewhere else, not a watered-down version of your situation — the real one, the one with death's shadow in it.

If you've been quietly assuming your particular situation is too far gone, too heavy, too close to the real darkness for any light to be relevant, this verse was written with exactly that kind of darkness in view. It doesn't flinch from naming how bad it can get before it says light shone there anyway.

If some part of your situation feels too dark to mention, that might be exactly the part this verse is talking about.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
