Give Thanks

Living Gratitude

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!
PSALM 107:1 · ESV

"Give thanks... for he is good." The order matters here. It's not thanks because things are going well right now — it's thanks rooted in a claim about character that's supposed to hold steady whether or not your circumstances agree with it that day.

That's a hard thing to buy into if gratitude, for you, has only ever meant noticing what's currently working. Most of us learned thanks as a reaction to good news. This verse is proposing something sturdier — thanks as a response to who God is, which the writer claims doesn't change even when the news does.

You don't have to feel grateful right now to consider whether that claim is true. You could just ask the question underneath it: is there a version of good that isn't dependent on your week going well? That's a different question than whether you feel thankful today — and maybe a more honest place to start.

If your gratitude has always depended on your circumstances cooperating, it might be worth exploring what a steadier version of good could look like.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
