Draw Near

Close to God

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
JAMES 4:8 · ESV

Seven words, and most of the weight is in the second half: "and He will draw near to you." This isn't a verse about closing an infinite distance through sheer effort. It's describing a response — you move first, and something moves back.

That matters if you've ever imagined God as distant on principle, someone who has to be earned or impressed before He'll pay attention. This verse doesn't describe a God waiting to be convinced. It describes one already leaning in, just waiting for the first small motion from your side.

"Draw near" doesn't require getting your life in order first. It's not a finish line, it's a direction — turning toward instead of away, however clumsily. If you've never tried simply turning toward God with your actual questions instead of performing certainty you don't have, this verse suggests that's exactly the kind of near He means.

If God has always felt distant to you, this verse is worth testing with one honest, small step in His direction.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
