Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.
"Your steadfast love is better than life." That's a striking comparison. Life is the thing we protect above almost everything else — and this verse says something else outranks it. Not that life doesn't matter, but that there's something more foundational underneath it.
This was written by someone in the wilderness, not comfortable circumstances — a place with no water, no safety, nothing to point to as proof things were fine. And still: "my lips will praise you." That's not praise born out of a good week. It's praise that survives even when the surroundings give no reason for it.
It's worth asking what that kind of love would have to be like to outweigh survival itself, and whether it's something you've ever actually been offered, or just something you've heard described.
