A Peace That Guards

Strength in Christ

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:7 · ESV

Anxiety doesn't usually announce itself with a name — it just shows up as a tight chest at 2 a.m., or a thought that loops for the hundredth time with no resolution. This verse pictures something standing between you and that spiral: not a solution to the problem you're anxious about, but a guard posted right at the entrance to your heart and mind.

That's a different kind of help than most of us go looking for. We want the anxious thing fixed. This verse offers something that works even before it's fixed — a peace that takes up position and doesn't let every worry walk straight through.

If you've spent a long time trying to think your way out of anxiety and found that thinking harder just makes more anxious thoughts, this verse is describing something that isn't produced by more effort. It's something that's given, and it stands guard whether or not the storm has passed yet.

If your mind has been fighting an anxious battle alone for too long, it might be worth finding out what it would mean to have a guard posted there instead.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
