Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 251

Rooted in Him

Living in Christ

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 · ESV

This verse uses two very physical images for something spiritual — rooted and built up. Roots go down where nobody sees them, doing the unglamorous work of holding a thing steady when the wind picks up. Building goes the other direction, adding height on a foundation that's already there. Together they describe a life that's stable underneath and still growing on top.

That's a far cry from how most people actually feel most days — more like something loose in a storm, reacting to whatever hits next, with no real foundation underneath the reacting. This verse isn't describing an achievement you earn through effort. It describes a way of receiving something and then simply living inside of it, the way a plant lives inside soil it didn't create.

You don't have to have any of this figured out to notice the appeal of it: a life that's steady not because nothing shakes it, but because something underneath it holds.

If what you're looking for is less something to achieve and more something solid to stand on, that's worth exploring further.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
