Peace Beyond Reason

Firm in Christ

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:7 · ESV

Notice the odd phrasing: peace that surpasses understanding. Not peace that comes from finally understanding your situation, from getting the answers, from the circumstances resolving. Peace that outruns your ability to explain it — which means it can show up before anything actually gets fixed.

That's a strange offer if you're used to thinking peace has to be earned by first solving the problem. Most of us operate that way: figure it out, then calm down. Paul is describing something that works in the reverse order, a kind of guard stationed at the door of your heart and mind, holding steady regardless of whether the situation outside has changed.

You don't have to already trust Christ Jesus to notice that this is a genuinely different offer than "think positive" or "it'll work out." It's a claim about a guard, not a mood.

If peace that doesn't depend on your circumstances sounds almost too good, it's worth asking an honest question about where that kind of peace could actually come from.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
