My Shepherd

Deep Roots

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
PSALM 23:1-2 · ESV

"I shall not want" sounds like a bold claim to make from where most of us are actually standing — plenty of us want quite a lot, and don't have it. But read what comes right after: it isn't a formula for getting everything you want. It's a description of someone being led, specifically, to rest.

Green pastures and still water aren't luxury images. They're basic-needs images — the kind of place an exhausted animal actually requires, not a reward for good behavior but the plain provision of a shepherd doing his job. The claim isn't that life will be easy. It's that whatever is needed will be provided, by someone who's paying close attention.

If you've spent years assuming you're on your own to figure out where the next patch of green grass is, this verse is quietly disagreeing with that assumption.

If the idea of actually being led somewhere, instead of having to find your own way, sounds worth exploring, that's a thread you could keep pulling.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
