Peace That Guards

Firm in Christ

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:7 · ESV

"Surpasses all understanding" is an odd thing to promise about peace, because it means you might not be able to reason your way into it — and you also might not be able to explain it once it's there. Most peace we know is downstream of circumstances: things worked out, so now I can relax. This verse describes something that doesn't wait for the circumstances to resolve first.

The image is also worth noticing — it will guard your hearts and minds. Guard, like a sentry standing at a gate, not just a mood passing through. Something actively keeping watch, positioned between you and whatever's trying to get in.

If peace has always felt conditional to you — available only once the anxious thing is settled — this verse is describing a different order entirely, one where the guard shows up before the threat is gone.

If your peace has always waited for the problem to be solved first, it might be worth asking whether it could work the other way around.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
