DAILY VERSE · Day 223

New Every Morning

Sufficient Grace

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
LAMENTATIONS 3:22-23 · ESV

This verse comes from a book about grief, not gratitude. Lamentations is exactly what it sounds like — a raw account of loss, a city in ruins, a writer with every reason to conclude that things are simply over. And it's in the middle of that book, not despite it, that these lines show up: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end.

That placement matters. This isn't a sentiment for people whose lives are going fine. It's written by someone staring directly at devastation and finding, apparently to his own surprise, that there was still something new to notice each morning. New every morning isn't a metaphor for optimism — it's a claim that whatever ran out yesterday gets replenished, not eventually, but by the next sunrise.

If your own life currently looks more like Lamentations than a psalm of praise, this line was written from inside that exact kind of day.

If things currently feel more like ruins than reasons for praise, this line was written from that exact place, not from above it.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
