Riches of His Grace

Sufficient Grace

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
EPHESIANS 1:7 · ESV

Redemption is a word that shows up when something has been lost or held against you — a pawned item bought back, a debt paid off by someone else. This verse uses it plainly: redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of trespasses. Not vague spiritual language, but the specific vocabulary of a debt that's been settled by another party.

What stands out is the phrase "riches of his grace." Not a bare minimum, not just enough to technically cover the cost — riches, an abundance. That's a strange way to describe forgiveness if you've only ever experienced it as grudging or conditional, doled out reluctantly by people keeping score.

If every apology you've ever given or received has come with strings attached, this verse is describing something categorically different — a forgiveness so generous the writer reaches for the language of wealth to describe it, not the language of a reluctant favor.

If forgiveness has only ever come to you with conditions attached, it might be worth finding out what an unconditional kind actually looks like.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
