Peace That Guards

Rooted in Christ

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:7 · ESV

There's a specific kind of peace this verse describes — not the absence of a problem, but a peace that stands guard while the problem is still there. That's an odd promise if you think about it. Most peace we know depends on things actually being resolved first.

The word "guard" is a military term — something stationed at a border, keeping watch, holding a line. Applied to your heart and mind, that's a strange and specific image: your worry showing up at the gate, and something standing there that's stronger than the worry, refusing to let it all the way in.

Maybe you've never experienced peace like that — the kind that doesn't wait for circumstances to improve. It's fair to wonder if it's even real. But it's also fair to notice that this isn't a peace people manufacture for themselves. It's described here as something that surpasses understanding — bigger than what you could talk yourself into.

If the peace you've tried to manufacture on your own has never quite held up, it might be worth considering where this kind actually comes from.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
