Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 152

New Every Morning

Firm Foundations

His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
LAMENTATIONS 3:22-23 · ESV

This line comes from a book of grief — Lamentations is basically someone sitting in the wreckage of everything they knew, refusing to pretend it's fine. And it's in that exact setting that this verse shows up: not despite the ruin, but in the middle of it.

That context matters. This isn't cheap optimism from someone whose life is easy. It's a claim made by a person surrounded by loss, insisting that whatever kindness exists in the world hasn't run out — it resets every single morning, whether or not yesterday went well.

You don't need yesterday to have gone well for this to apply to you today. That's actually the whole point. Mercy that's only new every morning is mercy that doesn't hold your bad days against you tomorrow.

If you're carrying yesterday like it determines what today can be, it might help to look at how this verse's author saw it differently.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
