Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 141

Love That Obeys

Courage to Obey

If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
JOHN 14:15 · ESV

Notice what this verse doesn't say. It doesn't say "if you love me, you'll feel a certain way" or "if you love me, you'll believe the right doctrines." It ties love directly to action — to what you actually do, not just what you privately feel or think.

That's a fairly demanding definition of love, and it's not unique to religion. Anyone who's been in a real relationship knows the difference between someone who says they love you and someone whose actions consistently show it. Words are cheap. Follow-through is not.

What's worth noticing here is that Jesus isn't asking for blind obedience to arbitrary rules. He's describing something closer to how love naturally works between people who actually trust each other — you do what matters to someone because you care about them, not because you're forced to. Whether or not you're ready to call yourself a follower of His, that's a definition of love worth measuring your own relationships against.

If you're curious what commandments Jesus actually meant by this, it's worth looking at what He asked of the people who followed Him.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
