Commit Your Way

The Surrendered Life

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
PSALM 37:5 · ESV

"Commit your way" is a picture of handing something over, not white-knuckling it yourself. The Hebrew idea behind it is closer to rolling a weight off your own shoulders onto someone else's — your path, your plans, the whole uncertain road ahead, physically transferred.

What comes next is the part worth noticing: trust, and then he will act. Not you'll act better once you've calmed down. He will act. The verse puts the labor somewhere other than your own effort, which is either wildly irresponsible advice or the most freeing thing you'll read this week, depending on whether it's true.

Maybe you've been carrying a decision, a relationship, a future you can't control no matter how hard you grip it. This verse isn't telling you to stop caring. It's asking whether you're willing to let the weight of the outcome rest somewhere other than entirely on you.

If the idea of handing over a weight you've been carrying alone sounds like relief, that relief is worth looking into.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
