A Living Sacrifice

The Surrendered Life

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
ROMANS 12:1 · ESV

"Living sacrifice" is a strange phrase if you sit with it. A sacrifice, in most ancient religion, was something that died on an altar and was done. This one is asked to keep breathing, keep walking around, and still be fully given — worship measured in a whole life, not a scheduled hour.

That's a bigger claim than most people expect from religion. It's not asking for an occasional gesture or a Sunday morning. It's suggesting that ordinary Tuesday things — how you treat people, what you do with your time, what you let matter to you — are the actual substance of it, not the exception to it.

If you've assumed faith is mostly about a building or a ritual, this verse pushes in a different direction: it's asking what it would look like to hand over the whole of an average day, not just the parts that feel spiritual.

If you've wondered whether faith could actually shape an ordinary Tuesday and not just a Sunday, that's worth thinking through further.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
