Father, Forgive Them

The Freedom of Forgiveness

And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
LUKE 23:34 · ESV

Picture where this was said from. Not a comfortable room, not a calm conversation — a cross, nails, people mocking him while it happened. If there was ever a moment someone had earned the right to be bitter, this was it. Instead: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

You don't have to accept every claim about who Jesus was to notice something unusual in that sentence. It's not resignation — he's not saying it doesn't matter. It's an active request, made in real time, for the people doing the harm to him. That's a strange kind of strength, the kind that doesn't wait for an apology before it lets go.

Maybe you've been on the receiving end of something that felt unforgivable. This verse isn't telling you how to feel about it. It's just showing you that forgiveness offered in the worst possible moment isn't naive — it might be the most honest thing a person can do with real pain.

If you've ever wanted to understand what could make someone forgive from a place like that, his story is worth a closer look.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
