On the Rock

Loving the Word

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
MATTHEW 7:24-25 · ESV

Two builders in this story hear the exact same words. The difference between them isn't what they heard — it's what they did with it afterward. One acts on it; the other doesn't. Same storm hits both houses. Only one is still standing when it's over.

That's an uncomfortable detail if you've ever collected spiritual ideas the way you'd collect interesting facts — nodding along, agreeing it sounds wise, and then walking away unchanged. Jesus is saying the agreeing part was never the point. The foundation only forms when the words actually get built into how you live, not just into what you believe.

You don't need a finished theology to start laying rock instead of sand. This verse suggests the storms are coming either way — the only real question is what your life is going to be standing on when they arrive.

If you've mostly agreed with good ideas without letting them change anything, it might be time to find out what actually building on them looks like.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
