Most people assume the path to God runs through self-improvement: clean up your life, then God will accept you. The Bible turns that completely around. "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). God moved toward you first, exactly as you are. You don't tidy yourself up to be loved; you're loved, and that love is what changes you.
So how do you actually begin? Not with a ritual to perform perfectly, but with a few honest steps of the heart. First, believe — that God is real, that He loves you, and that Jesus died and rose to bring you back to Him (Romans 10:9). You don't need certainty about everything; you need a sincere "yes" to what you do understand.
Second, turn. The Bible calls it repentance, which simply means a change of direction — agreeing with God about what's broken and turning from it toward Him. It isn't about shame; it's about honesty. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us" (1 John 1:9). You bring the mess; He brings the mercy.
Third, receive. A relationship with God is not earned, only welcomed. "To all who did receive Him… He gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). This is where many people pray for the first time — not fancy words, just opening the door. Something like: "Jesus, thank You for loving me and dying for me. I'm sorry for going my own way. I turn to You now. Come into my life, and make me Yours. Amen." If you mean it, He hears it. Heaven is not grading your grammar.
Then — and this is the part people miss — keep the conversation going. A relationship grows the way any relationship grows: by spending time together. Talk to God honestly every day; that's all prayer is. Read His words; a Gospel like John is a good place to start, and a short daily Scripture can keep you company (our God's Calling devotional sends one every day). Find others walking the same road, so you're not alone. None of this earns His love — it's how you enjoy it.
You can take the very first step today, and you don't have to take it by yourself. A real person here would be honored to pray with you, answer your questions, and help you begin — free, at your pace, with no pressure at all.
