Love That Never Ceases

Grace That Holds

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
LAMENTATIONS 3:22-23 · ESV

"Never ceases... never come to an end." It's the kind of language you'd be suspicious of anywhere else — nobody sells you anything with a straight face using the word never. But look at where this claim comes from: a book written in the middle of a city's destruction, not a season of comfortable optimism.

That context matters. This isn't someone with an easy life making sweeping promises about how things always work out. It's someone surrounded by wreckage, choosing to write down that love which doesn't quit anyway — in spite of, not because of, what was happening around him.

Maybe you've earned your skepticism of grand claims. Most people who make them haven't been tested the way this writer had been. That doesn't make the claim true automatically — but it does make it worth more consideration than a comfortable promise made by someone who's never had reason to doubt it.

If grand promises usually come from people who've never been tested, it might change things to know this one came from someone who had been.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
