Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 320

Beyond Understanding

Deep Peace

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:7 · ESV

Most peace has an explanation. You'd want to know why: the diagnosis came back clear, the money showed up, the relationship got repaired. This verse describes something that specifically doesn't have that kind of explanation — it "surpasses all understanding." Meaning even the person experiencing it couldn't fully account for it if you asked them why they feel calm.

There's something almost unsettling about that if you're used to needing reasons for your feelings to be trustworthy. But there's also something freeing in it. It means this peace isn't dependent on your circumstances lining up first. It's not waiting for the explanation to arrive.

Guard is the word used — not "gift" or "feeling," but guard, something active, standing watch over the two places most of our anxiety actually lives: the heart and the mind. If those are the two places you feel most exposed, this verse is aimed directly at them.

If you've never trusted a peace you couldn't explain, it might be worth meeting the one Jesus offers before you understand it.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
