Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 311

Rooted in Him

Firm in Christ

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 · ESV

Picture a tree that keeps getting dug up and replanted somewhere new every few weeks. It never has time to root, never grows tall, always looks a little sickly. A lot of us live like that spiritually — trying one thing, then another, never staying anywhere long enough to actually grow.

This verse pictures something different: rooted, built up, established. Three images stacked together — plant, building, foundation — all pointing at the same idea. Stability that comes from staying connected to one thing, not from constantly searching for the next one.

And it ends somewhere unexpected: "abounding in thanksgiving." Not gritted-teeth endurance. Overflowing gratitude. If your spiritual life so far has felt more like uprooting than rooting, this verse suggests the alternative isn't more effort — it's finally staying long enough with the right thing to let it hold you.

If you've spent years searching without ever putting down roots, it might be worth asking what it would mean to stay with Jesus long enough to find out.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
