Love That Frees

Grace Enough

For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
PSALM 86:13 · ESV

"Delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol" is not gentle language. This is someone describing a rescue from the deepest kind of trouble — not a bad day, but something closer to the bottom. And the reason given for that rescue isn't that the person earned it or fixed themselves first. It's simply that the love was great.

That order matters. Rescue came before resolution. The love wasn't a reward for climbing partway out — it was the thing that reached all the way down.

If you've ever felt like you need to get yourself to a better place before you'd be worth reaching for, this verse pushes back on that. It describes love reaching into the depths, not waiting at the surface for someone to swim up first. Whether or not you're ready to trust that kind of love, it's worth noticing that it's what's actually being offered.

If you've been waiting to be in better shape before you're worth reaching for, this might be the moment to question that assumption.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
