Discovering Jesus Together
DAILY VERSE · Day 248

He Calls You by Name

Following Jesus

To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
JOHN 10:3 · ESV

Being called by name is a small detail, easy to skip past, but it's the whole point. A shepherd with a hundred sheep could just herd them as a mass — shout, wave a stick, move the group. Instead, this verse pictures something more specific: a voice that knows individuals, that calls them out one at a time.

Most of us go through long stretches feeling like a number in a system — a case file, a customer ID, one more person in the crowd. So there's something almost jarring about a God described this way: not managing a herd, but knowing which one you are.

You don't have to already feel found to notice that this is what's being claimed — that you're not anonymous to whoever is behind this verse. That's either an easy thing to dismiss or a genuinely strange kind of hope, depending on how closely you let yourself look at it.

If the thought of being known specifically, not just processed generally, catches something in you, that's worth following further.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
