Stay on the Vine

Deep Roots

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
JOHN 15:4 · ESV

Some verses give instructions. This one describes a condition — and then states, almost as a law of nature, what follows from it. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself. Not "probably won't" or "will struggle to." Cannot. It's built into how branches work.

What's easy to miss is the reciprocity in the first line: abide in me, and I in you. This isn't a one-way command to try harder at staying close. Jesus commits to the other half too. The connection isn't something you maintain through willpower alone — it's mutual, held from both ends.

Maybe you've measured your spiritual life by how hard you're trying, and come up feeling like you're always falling short. This verse locates the real issue somewhere else entirely: not effort, but attachment.

If effort has never quite felt like enough, it might be worth exploring what it means that Jesus commits to staying too.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
