Abide in Me

Living Dependence

"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
JOHN 15:5 · ESV

It's a blunt line, almost uncomfortably so: apart from me you can do nothing. Not everything is harder without him. Nothing produces, nothing bears fruit, apart from this connection. Most of us would rather hear something gentler and more encouraging about our own capability.

But there's relief hiding inside that bluntness too. If the fruit genuinely depends on staying attached to the vine rather than on your own grit, then the pressure shifts. You're not being asked to generate a good life out of raw effort. You're being invited to stay close to something — someone — and let what grows, grow from there.

Surrender doesn't usually get marketed as strength. This verse suggests it's the doorway to it. That's worth sitting with, whether or not you're ready yet to call it true for yourself.

If you've been carrying the whole weight of your own growth alone, it might be worth exploring what it would mean to let go of some of that grip.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
