Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Not reluctantly, not under compulsion — this verse is oddly specific about the emotional posture behind giving, not just the giving itself. It's not enough to hand something over through gritted teeth because you feel obligated. What's being described here is generosity that actually wants to happen.
That distinction matters more than it might seem. Most of us know the difference between giving someone your time because you genuinely want to and giving it because saying no felt impossible. One drains you. The other, somehow, doesn't — even though the cost might be identical.
There's something here worth noticing about what's actually being valued: not the size of the gift, but the freedom behind it. A God who's described as loving a cheerful giver isn't primarily interested in what ends up in the collection plate. He's interested in what's happening in the person doing the giving.
If you're curious what kind of God cares more about your heart than your wallet, that's worth a closer look.
