Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Notice this psalm doesn't promise the valley gets skipped. It says even though I walk through — the darkness is still real, still part of the route. What changes isn't the terrain. It's who's walking it with you.
That's a small but important shift from most comfort people offer in hard seasons — the well-meaning "it'll get better soon" that quietly implies you're on your own until it does. This verse doesn't rush you out of the valley. It just insists you're not walking it alone, rod and staff included, presence guaranteed even in the parts that stay dark.
If you're in a season like that right now, this verse isn't asking you to feel unafraid. It's naming a companion in the dark, and leaving it to you to decide if that changes anything.
If you're walking through something dark right now, it might be worth finding out who this psalm says is walking with you.
A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
