A Contrite Heart

A Humble Heart

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
PSALM 51:17 · ESV

There's an assumption hidden in a lot of religious imagination — that God wants your best self shown up, polished and composed. This verse says something almost the reverse. The offering that actually lands is a broken spirit. A heart that's cracked open, not one performing wholeness it doesn't feel.

Think about what that means practically. You don't have to arrive with your doubts resolved or your grief tidied up before this counts as real. The brokenness itself is the offering. Not despite the mess — the mess is what's being brought.

If you've stayed away from anything spiritual because you assumed you'd have to fake being fine first, this verse says the opposite is true. A contrite heart — honest, unguarded, not pretending — is exactly what won't be turned away.

If you've been waiting to feel put-together before you bring anything spiritual honest attention, that wait might not be necessary.

A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
