Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Jesus says this while genuinely hungry, out in the wilderness, having gone without food for weeks — not as a comfortable theory but as a real answer to a real temptation to solve his hunger the easy way. "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."
He's not saying bread doesn't matter or that physical needs are unimportant — he was hungry, after all. He's saying something more specific: that a person can have every physical need met and still be starving for something bread was never going to provide. There's a hunger underneath the hunger, one that food, success, comfort, and distraction all fail to actually reach.
If you've ever gotten everything you were chasing and still felt strangely empty afterward, this verse is naming that exact experience. It's suggesting the emptiness isn't a malfunction — it's a signal pointing toward a different kind of nourishment altogether.
