For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
It would be easy to file the Bible under "old book" — interesting history, maybe, but not something with anything to say to you personally today. This verse pushes back hard against that idea: "the word of God is living and active," not a museum piece but something the writer says still moves, still cuts, still reaches.
The image is almost uncomfortable on purpose — sharper than a two-edged sword, dividing soul and spirit, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. That's not a comforting metaphor. It's describing something that doesn't just inform you, it exposes you, gets past the version of yourself you present to other people and reaches whatever is underneath.
You don't have to already trust the Bible to notice that claim is unusual. Most old texts don't claim to still be reading you back. This one does.
If you've only ever thought of the Bible as history, it might be worth reading a page of it as if it were actually speaking to you.
A short video on this is coming soon — for now, read on.
