Without Ceasing

Learning to Pray

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 · ESV

"Pray without ceasing" sounds impossible if you picture prayer as folded hands and closed eyes, a formal activity you have to stop everything else to do. Read that way, this verse is just guilt dressed up as encouragement.

But notice what it's grouped with: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances. These read less like three separate chores and more like one continuous posture — a running conversation kept open in the background of an ordinary day, not a task added on top of it. Gratitude on the drive to work. An honest word muttered before a hard conversation. Not ceremony, just contact.

If prayer has always felt like something you'd have to get good at before you could do it right, this verse suggests something different: that it's less a skill to master and more a habit of staying in touch, however imperfectly, with someone who's already listening.

If ongoing conversation with God sounds more possible than formal prayer ever did, that's a door worth trying.
